I was just about to point to that document! :)

The last part under "Using the Arguments scope as a structure" is most
important.  This all jives pretty closely with other languages that allow
optional or undeclared arguments.  Only a few languages actually let you use
undeclared arguments to begin with (there are a laundry list of reasons why
they should be avoided).  The languages that allow you to declare optional
arguments almost always require a default value to which the argument is set
if it is not passed in.  I believe MM got this functionality right.
