It's necessary, but I don't think that makes it a "good thing". The
intricacies of ColdFusion variable scoping within functions and particularly
within CFC functions are pretty convoluted. And though I don't mind
initializing variables in other languages, having to initialize variables in
this one place in ColdFusion is very idiosyncratic. It's because of this
that people forget to scope their query variables. This all becomes even
more glaringly apparent when teaching people ColdFusion.
