In my experience, serialization is not THE answer for data
persistence.  If in doubt, think about Spectra and the Content Object
Database.  If, however, you want to archive a complete single object
and not worry about manipulating it in the database, then
serialization is great.  It is also good for transfering a full object
across a network.
