I made one that used the number of seconds since 1/1/2000 -- which
required fewer digits than the full date string.  Also GetTickCount()
is a good value to use.

My algorithm used date, tick count, and then 4 random digits.  After
that, I "compressed" the number string by converting it into
characters.  I ended up with about 8 character codes that were pretty
good.  I'll dig up the code, if that would help give you any more
direction.
