Sorry to keep an OT post going, but even MACR (hardly a fully unbiased source) says that PDF has nearly 80% penetration:

I suspect if you asked Adobe, they would quote you a well-reasoned number even higher than that.

Ummm ... "plain compatible html" should be visible in all browsers, no?
Well, how plain is "plain"? No css? No css positioning? If no one cares how
it looks, just use the simpliest html markup to lay out the page. You don't
need stats for that. If a visitor can't see the page then, there ain't much
else you can do.

Otherwise, if you're looking toward having a well styled css layout as an
alternative to Flash, here's a pretty good resource to gauge browser use.

I'll move a little further OT, if you don't mind ... I was at a presentation
by Ben Forta a few weeks ago here in Zurich, and on the Flash player, he
pointed out that most web developers don't think twice about putting PDF's
on their site, and only about 50% of users have the PDF viewer. And it's a
huge download.

If someone hits a page that requires the newest version of Flash, i think
most just go get it, otherwise we wouldn't see those penetration statistics
increasing month by month. It's a very small download and installs very
easily.

I just have the same question in the back of my mind about a CFMX 7 Flash
form i just put up on a site and i'm trying to resolve it myself. I'm
counting that most of that 10% or whatever is left now that don't have V.7
installed, extropolating ahead to March 2005, are going to see the
invitation to get the latest Flash player as an opportunity and will install
it.

Of those that don't, my partner/graphic designer here always says, "Oh, we
don't want those people as our customers anyway!"

;-)

PS - To get back OnT, my Flash form was of course rendered by a
ContentDisplay object, which all the good folks on this list helped me to
understand how to build and incorporate into a model that seems to work well
enough. Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! Sorry for the question, but I have been dealing with a company dictated browser for the last 5 years, do you feel it would be possible to get higher accessibility rates with plain 'compatible' html? If so, what numbers are achievable (or resources where I could answer this?).

Thanks,

Justin

This is really off topic, so I apologize in advance. Can anyone direct me
to a good resource for browser compatibility metrics. I need to make a
decision between using flash or "very compatible" html. If anyone has
thoughts regarding this decision knowing I am trying to hit 99% of all
browsers (If that is even possible) without having to download or install,
please let me know. The app is simple, its just processing a single
payment, nothing complex at all.
