The method of sharing and the security are two distinct issues.
As far as sharing goes, Webservices are a good bet. We use them extensively and they work quite nicely for sharing data across multiple, disparate systems.
For security, local DB security would be one area of concern, and then ecryption of the Webservices calls is the other.

I hope this isn't too far off-topic.
I have been tasked with sharing some data between two web sites. The data needs to be secure (ssn included in data). While both web sites are currently under my control and both are written in ColdFusion, future sites that will need to be involved in the data sharing may not be.
I would very much like to do things as correctly as possible and thereby hopefully influence some of the standards adopted for these (government related) web sites.
Naturally, web services seem like the obvious answer, but I am open to other options.
If anyone has any advise (or can tell me a better place to look), I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Steve Bryant.
