In general, coding guidelines recommend one approach over another or
recommend not using a particular approach. That doesn't necessarily
mean that the programming language should only have features that are
"recommended". Take C++ for example - most every C++ coding standard
written by anyone will tell you not to use whole rafts of syntax and
library functions.
As for "the same product both of them are working on", try to remember
that Web Team are CF developers - like you. It seems perfectly
reasonable to me that a given group of CF developers would have
guidelines that recommend not to use certain language features.
