No its not a good idea to go grab data outside of your cfc. It forces you to assume that that application variable will always be there and the method name will never change. That can cause many headaches down the road.
 
Joe has a great idea up there. (You were referring to setting a value in CFC variables scope correct? "Property" threw me for a moment. I was thinking cfproperty.)
