A ColdFusion query is a data structure. It doesn't provide any meaningful encapsulation. The reason you'd return a query from your Gateway and loop over it in your presentation tier -- thereby breaking encapsulation -- is for performance (Business Objects can be expensive) and simplicity (ColdFusion offers quite a few short cuts for looping over queries and otherwise manipulating them).
