if the data exists in my database as a null.. my DAO (presumably) gets the record of data, build, then passes its query info into the bean (or whatever) via it's setters. The beans setter's then deal with any NULLs that I need it to handle.
on saving my DAO also knows the magic number and so the cfqueryparam will save a null if the value= the magic number: <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_integer" value="#x.getY()#" null="#x.getY() EQ magicNumber#" /> Hope that answers your question.
