Nando,

Both your web server and OS should already have mechanisms to cache
frequently accessed files.  If that's not working, maybe you could set
up a RAM drive and store the images there?

Your best bet, of course, is to simply move the images to another
server. Surely, you have an old box sitting around that's capable of
running Linux+Apache and serving static content?
