You caught us out, Joseph. Certain "persons" from a certain "company" paid us a certain amount of "money" to show off CF's ability to handle XML. At first, we fought it...
Hal: You want us to put the config stuff in a text file that can be read by humans AND computers? Are you nuts? We'd rather put stuff into a database so that you have to register it before you can run it and there's no natural way to see what's in there. Them: Shaddup. We'll make it worth your while. Ben: How "much" worth our while? Them: How does 50 million Simoleans strike you losers? Hal and Ben: 50 million? Screw the database (as right of an idea as it is). Lay the cash on us. [cash changes hands] Them: So what are you gonna call this framework? Ben: We were thinking about "Harmonia" since everything works together so nicely. Hal: Or maybe "HotSweet" just cause I heard a guy give a preso on Rails and he kept saying it was both sweet AND hot. Them: How about calling it "Mac", you know short for your...benefactors. Just think about it. [They leave. Ben and I put our heads together.] Ben: I really think Harmonia would be best. Hal: For 50 million, Simoleans? He can call it "Necrophilia" as far as I'm concerned. Ben: But what about integrity? Hal: What about the money? All right, all right. We'll take the "Mac" they wanted and the "H" from Harmonia and/or HotSweet and we'll call it "Mach". Ben: Mach? Just "Mach"? Hal: That's it: Mach. Ben: And you don't think some day late in October, say, someone really sharp will see through this web of deceit? Hal: OK, so then we give him 5 million Simoleans. Besides, what are the chances anyone could see the futility of using XML over a database? Ben: I just hope you're right... Hal: Stick with me, kid. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joseph Flanigan Sent: Friday, October 28, 2005 2:22 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [CFCDev] CFSQLTool debate I did not mean to stir-up a discussion on Mach, I was using one aspect of Mach, XML, as something I think is wrong. But not Mach itself. This is my opinion. The reason is that XML is primarily an exchange language. Because it is based on an abstract syntax notation, DTD, it is very easy to overload and mis-use as a data store such as in Mach. A web application can have 1000s of events, as such, a management system is a better choice to store events. It occurred to me that Mach's XML was a excuse to demonstrate CF's ability to handle XML and not a real serious event store.
