Because they are a lot of work, i suppose, and aimed at a limited audience.
Design Patterns explained is a very good book IMO. The reason i like it so much is a) because Alan takes you behind the scenes into the underlying considerations and thinking process he uses when designing a model, and b) because you really get a sense that designing a model is pretty much like designing a house. There are lots of ways to design a house, so there is no right way and wrong way, but there still is good design and bad design.
