all you're doing is returning a value passed to the method.
You are right, I actually meant arguments.fieldValue.
 
I think race conditions could occur if there were two simultaneous calls from different clients to this one application scoped function - think of a much more time consuming function that might take, say, 10 seconds to complete. Is a var scoped variable request-local as well as function-local?
