I finally heard back from Smartertools about our "unknown sender" issue. They suggested turning on detailed logging to see who exactly is sending the email. I responded back asking if this implied that our spammer was a "real" subscriber. (In other words, a spammer who went to the trouble of signing up for the list just to spam.) If it was - then we will remove the ability to sign up via email and make it web based only (with a CAPTCHA). Worse comes to worse we can make it a closed list where we have to manually approve any new signup.
In other news - in about a week or two this list will move to a new server.
