Its not ColdFusion but ACEGI is an awesome security framework and and its a great framework to study. Its a sub project of Spring and we actually use it with our CF apps. We actually do something very similar to what you were outlining. We get authentication from a Single singon solution, as well as some authorization information and then we also gather further information from a database for some applications. Not trying to push ACEGI but it is a great framework to look at and see how they implement things as it is a very well respected framework from a well respected group.
