I have personally composed a UDF or a Util component into my other components to accomplish this goal.
That said, It makes for a cleaner API to just inject the method into the bean. This is facilitated in your custom factory or by using ColdSpring. I would vote for the Util component or the UDF component before I used a direct reference to the application scope.
