Baz, There is a small library that I built and use for pretty much all my personal/freelance projects; it deals with abstracting the basic interaction with a data storage; a particular thing about this library is that you can use different types of backend data storage (databases, xml files, multiple databases on a failover configuration, etc). This library doesn't attempt to be the end-all data abstraction library, but it covers pretty much all common cases and is easy to customize when needed.
The following blog post explains a bit more and contains the downloadable file: http://www.oscararevalo.com/index.cfm/2007/11/28/Using-Polymorphism-and-Inheritance-to-Build-a-Switchable-Data-Access-Layer If you like it and want to give it a try let me know and I'll post an updated version to the library.
