It looks to me like cctools ranlib just can't understand the ARM object files. I took Bob's tack in: http://llvm.org/viewvc/llvm-project?view=rev&revision=166114 and just drop them on 10.6.
I tested this on a 10.6 machine and it resolves the issue for me, let me know if it doesn't work for you for some reason.
