efriedma added a comment. I'm not trying to argue what the `pure`/`const` attribute in C/C++ is supposed to mean. I agree with your interpretation of the gcc documentation/implementation. I'm saying that there's a mismatch between the gcc `pure`/`const` and the LLVM IR `memory(read)`/`memory(none)`, and therefore you can't unconditionally lower `const` to `memory(none)`.
