I didn't know if "%" was reserved for implementation-specific calls (on cursor search, the only place I saw it). I've pushed the rewrite; please take a look and run tests to see that it's good. I've temporarily created a new branch foreign-string. After that, I'll write the translate-into-foreign-memory method.
