If you are not set on Postgresql then you may want to look at Interbase. It runs seamlessly on both Windows, Linux and many other Unix flavors. There is a free version out there and the purchased version is very affordable. Unfortunatly, Borland doesn't know how to market it so its another one of Borlands best kept secrets. It is very powerfull and competes with MS Sql and Oracle. Depending on what you are trying to do will depend on which one is better.
I have never used Postgresql, however if you have any questions on Interbase I will try to field them for you.
