{An Open Letter to the Developers}

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing today with reference to a number of concerns and issues
which I have encountered, or have been told about, within your
application "Compare Friends".

1 - Intrusive Advertising
Whilst I understand that development and hosting of applications cost
money, I believe that the methodology currently in use by yourselves
are intrusive, detract from the value of the application and are very
unlikely to provide any real income for yourselves in their current
form.
Inserting random people into comparison screens, asking users to
compare a known person to an unknown person does not seem to be inline
with the original intentions of this application, may result in
inaccurate ratings for people compared in these match-ups and are very
unlikely to convert into "click-throughs" for your advertisers.
The end result is akin to going to a friend's house party and finding
that within the guest there are a half-dozen hookers - they aren't
your friends, they detract from the party, and the people who see it
are very unlikely to actual avail themselves of the offered services.

2 - Insensitive Notifications
I was recently contacted by a friend on Facebook who received messages
from your application which she found quite disparaging. I do not
believe that I had checked/unchecked the provided box to authorise the
notification of users with regards to whether I had rated them as a
"winner" or "loser" in any match-ups. Further, due to this application
placing a message in my News Feed, this user had been able to identify
me as the person responsible for the notifications, and was upset
about what these notifications inferred regarding my thoughts of her.
There must be an option for a user to completely opt-out of any
notifications being sent by the system.

Realistically, in it's current form, this application is not well
suited for a community such as Facebook, and if anything goes against
one of the unwritten ideals of Facebook, which is to being people
together - instead this application upsets and spams people we have
marked as friends in the community, and bombards those of us who try
and use it with advertisements for services which we will most likely
never use.

I would strongly suggest that the developers re-examine their
decisions regarding advertising and notifications, as all you are
doing now is turning the word-of-mouth which was responsible for the
expansion of your userbase to begin with, around and the only thing I
am hearing now is negative comments about this application and how it
is being administered.
