Leaving the box checked you will vote publicly. That means that your
friends will be notified about it, but not always with the same
notification text (there's no a single notification that goes after
public voting).

Some of the notifications say just your name, some of them mention the
comparing question, sometimes it says how you voted... In general, the
voted friend, who was a "winner", could be notified of everything that
considers him/her as a winner (he/she receives one of the random
public notifications), but the friend, who was voted as "the defeated
one", could be informed that he/she lost, but not in a rude, direct
way so he/she couldn't find out from the same notification who voted
him/her as a loser and what category he/she lost in.

Even with the notifications going after public voting, there is a dose
of protection for the "voter", but also a dose of contingency.

However, if you want to be sure what exact type of notifications were
sent after your public comparing you can always check them: Click
"Inbox" -> "Notifications" tab -> there you'll see a list of
notifications, sent by you to your voted friends.
