Hi Chandler and Scooby teams,

I have spun up the discussion on the Sharing Format on the Cosmo Mailing list today. I think its critical that we all work together to make this sharing format happen. Its a strong tenet of our whole ecosystem and it affects all of our projects.

Please take the time to pop over to the Cosmo mailing list and get involved in the discussion. I am copying my email to the Cosmo list below in case you aren't subscribed to the Cosmo list yet.

I decided to post my original email to the Cosmo list because the sharing format will involve Cosmo in a big way. Scooby and Chandler will both work with the sharing format. In my opinion, that makes Cosmo the common denominator in the sharing format.

Please respond to the cosmo list if you have questions, comments, concerns, ideas, suggestions, etc.

Thanks,
--> John

Hello Everyone,

At Sprint Week, we had a meeting where we discussed the Sharing Format for the ecosystem. We talked about a number of proposals and ideas. Katie proposed the following priorities for Sharing and we reached consensus on those priorities. In case you don't remember, they are:

Priorities
1. Desktop Client <--> Cosmo (with support for "rich sharing")
    Web Client <--> Cosmo (with support for "rich sharing")

2. Cosmo implements standard formats/protocols for interop with existing/future clients: CalDAV, iCal+WebDAV, Atom/RSS, CardDAV, Atom Pub, GData

3. Use standard formats when sensible.

We then talked about a number of ideas for the sharing format, a number of concerns, and some requirements. We also talked about a number of assumptions. For the meeting notes, please check out:

At the end of the meeting, we left with a number of next actions that need to take place to get the ball rolling. Here's the list of items we had at the end of the meeting:

Proposed Staging
- Investigate cosmo sync performance
- SYNCREPORT
- Chandler starts using new format
- Cosmo understands the new format (translations)
- Cosmo implements transactions
- Chandler can break out of the "clouds"
- Migration?

Now that we have recovered from Sprint Week, its time to pick this up where we left off and get the ball rolling again. With that said, I have some questions:

1. Has anyone done any work towards the items on the proposed staging list?
2. Who should own each of these next actions?
3. Is this list of actions complete? I am not sure it is.
4. We talked about XML/RDF, Cloud XML, and micro formats. We need a proposal to start the discussion on the sharing format? Does anyone have a strawman they are willing to float?
5. What about the protocol? Are we set on DAV as the protocol for sharing?
6. What concrete steps can we take to move this effort forward?
7. Do you have any questions? Please respond and post them to the mailing list.

When you look at the notes from our discussion at Sprint Week, I think you could say that we got to the point where we have the seed of a strategy for sharing. We need to take it to the next level by flushing out the strategy and then creating a plan on where we need to go and how we get there.

So, I ask you to speak up now. Let's get ideas out on the table and get the discussion flowing.

Thanks,
--> John
