Build, release and QA
---------------------
*Checkpoint build*
Bear sent a link to the checkpoint of Monday, June 19. This is the first
checkpoint that includes the background sync feature, and thus may be
less stable than recent checkpoints.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006148.html

Dan sent out the checkpoint status. Sheila observed that many of the
bugs in the checkpoint status are really work items/tasks for the next
phase, and that it might be more useful to filter those out to get a
better picture of new bugs.

*Feature freeze*
Heikki pointed out that we had a feature freeze planned for Wed, Jun 21.
He asked that people look at fixing disabled functional tests.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006159.html

We went into feature freeze mode Thurs, June 22. Heikki gave < 10 bugs
as the branching criteria.

*wxPython build changes*
Bear listed changes being made as part of the new wx rollout.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006166.html

The new tarball went live Thurs Jun 22.

Performance
-----------
*Performance tracking questions*
Heikki noted that we're concentrating on performance for 0.7. We have an
Intel iMac running tests, and it is getting pretty good numbers,
especially relative to PPC Mac. Heikki would like to adjust the targets
down in some cases: (1) double clicking to create a new event: 0.2s (2)
sharing tests: 1s publish and 1s subscribe.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006150.html

*Perf alpha3 bugs*
Philippe and Heikki had a discussion about tracking perf bugs for
alpha3. Heikki wanted to keep them in alpha3 to encourage people to
collect information on the perf cases. Philippe preferred to move them
to alpha4 to for overall bug count clarity.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006169.html

*Perf test data*
Philippe forwarded a private thread about test data. Heikki explained
that he's concerned about comparison data, and proposes that we continue
using the same 3000 event test calendar, creating smaller data sets to
do manual runs. Philippe asked if we should recreate the data set for
each test run with events relative to the current date. Heikki noted
that we are far enough from our targets that this optimization is likely
in the noise, but that we could go ahead and do that when we get close
to our targets. Sheila noted that the test data should be representative
of real user data and currently supported features, including all-day,
@time, and anytime events. Dan observed that the 3000 event calendar has
only one type of recurrence. Philippe remembered Mimi doing a survey
about representative data and suggested we use this information. Katie
pointed out the bug # for tracking this project (Bug 6029).

Intern and SoC projects
-----------------------
*MVA*
Xun noted that PCA works ok for pre-defined tags. Xun gave pseudo-code for an algorthim to extract named entities for use as automatic tags. He mentioned that he's using Minipar as a named entity recognizer (people's names, organization names, city names).
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006146.html

In response to Philippe's question, Xun described making PCA work for predefined tags in more detail. He grabs 300 articles and uses slashdot's categorizations (5 predefined categories). He uses some of the data to build category vectors (making use of lucene). He can then try and classify "new articles" by computing a distance with the category vectors. (More detail about how this works in the message). He noted that the classification accuracy is about 76%. Philippe hoped the Lucene synonym recognizer would prove helpful in extracting named entities; Xun explained he didn't think it would. He gave an example: "paris", "city of light" and "French capital" are synonyms, whereas "paris" and "London" are named entities in a set. Entity recognition is done with NLP routines. Philippe asked about the Minipar license. Xun explained he's just using it for prototyping -- he noted the license makes the software available royalty free for non commercial use only. He explained that Minipar helps associate entities with their semantic class. Xun noted that he's using 0.6.1, which is different enough from 0.7alpha3 that he's unlikely to have time to port it. Xun noted that MVA looks promising for pre-defined tag classification, and would like to engage in more discussion with Chandler folks about integrating it.

*IMAP server project*
Travis Vachon, a summer intern, introduced himself to the list. Travis
is working on a project to make Chandler act like an IMAP server. This
would give us a path for other local mail clients to read and write mail
into Chandler's repository, allowing the user to move mail back and
forth between Chandler and their main email client. Travis asked
questions about handling MIME messages and about persisting odd Python
objects to the repository.

*i18n*
The python egg based resource management system is ready for code review. Markku placed two eggs with instructions on a wiki page. Comments are welcome; Brian and Markku will start integrating into Chandler next week. Markku has started documentation.

*Contact/Address book project*
Ernesto Rivera, a Google SoC student, introduced himself to the list.
Ernesto is working on adding contacts to Chandler, building on some
existing work from PyCon 2006. He gave a link to his project page and
listed his work plan, which included integrating contacts into the ui first (stamping, custom views), simple and nested groups of contacts, and a more detailed review of the domain model to comply with vCard later.

Misc dev issues
---------------
*Sort order for schema.Enumerations*
Bryan and PJE discussed sort order for enumerations. The last proposal
in the thread changed the "values" attribute to be a dict with tuples
containing ordering and label info (for i18n). PJE asked that Bryan
update parcel-schema-guide.txt if he made any changes to schema.Enumeration.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006153.html

*Chandler deadlock*
John observed a possible deadlock problem when quitting Chandler. Andi
asked that John get a stack trace of all threads when he is in that
situation.
http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/chandler-dev/2006-June/006161.html

*bogus HIDE_READONLY*
Grant pointed out other instances of wx.HIDE_READONLY, after observing
Heikki's checkin removing them. Heikki fixed the instances missed by his editor setup.

Meetings and Announcements
--------------------------
*Wing IDE*
Bryan forwarded the Wing IDE 2.1 announcement, noting that he's been
using the release candidate with no problems.

*Apps meeting*

*IRC testing session*
We had an IRC testing session Friday June 23 to shake out bugs in
background sync.
