Actually, I made it the ctrl key on purpose, so that we didn't have to
find out what platform someone was running in order to explain how to
use this mechanism: it's the only key consistently labeled on all
keyboards on all platforms.
If holding down ctrl at app-launch means something to a particular
platform, then we could change it. (I asked, back then, and didn't hear
any platform-specific reasons why ctrl wouldn't work.) Otherwise, I want
to keep it consistent.
