I waited to answer this because I was hoping to get the answer on the
Mac I'm using here at work, but it turns out OS X doesn't have a proc
filesystem. While I'm sure detailed information about memory maps is
available somewhere on a Mac, Google didn't cough it up too easily and
I'm much more familiar with how to get this information on Linux.
Fortunately, I think the data should be comparable.

I've posted a (wikified) version of /proc/{chandler process
number}/smaps from an Ubuntu Linux system here:
http://wiki.osafoundation.org/bin/view/Journal/ProcFilesystemMemoryExploration20060905

I've had more trouble finding specific information on the private/shared
distribution of non-resident memory, but there is certainly quite a bit
of interesting data on the page linked above.

Particularly interesting are the 8192kB memory regions with no
corresponding file and 16-48 kB of resident memory. I'm afraid I don't
have enough expertise in this area to have an idea of what these might
be. There are currently 7 of these creating a 57MB footprint in virtual
memory, but around a 212kB footprint in resident memory. Any thoughts?
