This rings a bell. Someone posted about this before.
I don't know what it is but:

   - somehow an abstract set or a ref collection is being used but it's got no
     view, not a happy situation

   - we can take a look at this tomorrow in your debugger, if you'd like

   - if getSelectionRanges() is supposed to return the current selection ranges
     and if these depend on an index being there, why have this method create
     a new index and then return no ranges ?
     It seems that it'd be more efficient to check for the existence of
     the index that is supposed to have the selection ranges and return
     nothing if the index doesn't exist instead of creating it.
