Why do we always pull down our own version of python?

Once we migrated away from Python 2.3 we started also running into the situation where the system Python was either non-existent or the wrong version. This continues to be a problem for us today.

If this is the only reason Chandler now bundles its own version of Python, and it would otherwise work with the stock 2.[45] from python.org [*], it would be cool if the install package didn't include it and the installer instead downloaded it on-the-fly if it determined that it's needed.
