I think that the feedback I've gotten so far seems strongest in the area

"don't wait for my answer to proceed with the compact". I could change
the
current setup to have a better dialog that:
 - let's you pick a "don't ask me again, just do it option"
 - let's you trigger a backup first (just in case)
 - let's you cancel the compact while in progress
 - has a progress bar instead of using the status bar

rev 14351 implements the following:

  - auto-start the compact() after 30 seconds, with countdown :)
  - update a progress bar while compacting
  - cancel a compact() in progress

Andi..

a quick question on implementation: is the user able to schedule the compact
job?
i could see a benefit in this, in that a user could determine his/her own
usual downtime (say, saturdays at 3am for those that keep their computers on
all night) and schedule for then. if the app isn't running at the scheduled
time, the compact dialog would pop up when the app next starts. it could
optionally show up in the calendar if you'd like to give the user that sort
of insight into the inner workings of the app. in this way, the user could
feel a little more in control of the process.
just a thought,
