From the desktop client point of view, there are several possible
levels of support:
1) Dogfooding and testing the existing Windows client on Vista.
2) Having some number of developers use Vista as their full-time
development platform.
3) Running a Vista tinderbox.
4) Building the app natively on Vista.
Long term, it seems we might be skating on thin ice a little if we
don't consider 1 or maybe 3. (We kind of have the dogfooding part
outsourced to one of our users at the moment ;), but maybe there are
more people to give us coverage.
If we are going to support Vista sidebar widgets, there is also a
question of how we will build and distribute them. Either we could do
something pretty ad-hoc (the developer in charge builds a binary), or
more formal (i.e. have a build machine set up to produce a binary or
installer).

Mimi listed "Vista sidebar" as one of the widget containers. I
thought it might be worth having a general conversation about Vista
support for both desktop and widgets. We could make decisions
differently for each -- afaik there is no technical reason why we
would need to support Vista on the desktop to do a Vista sidebar
widget. If we think the time is right for a Vista sidebar widget
though, that calls into question why we're not supporting Vista on
the desktop.
For context, operating system market share as of Jan 2008, according
to one report:

- 75% Windows XP
- 12% Windows Vista
- 4.3% Mac intel
- 3.3% Mac ppc
- 2.7% Windows 2000
- 0.67% Linux
- 2% Other
Jared, any input on % Vista users we see on Hub or the website?
Questions:
- What infrastructure do we need to do Vista sidebar widgets or
support
Vista on the desktop? How many Vista licenses, any new hardware?
- Should we bite the bullet and officially support Vista on the
desktop?
(Or perhaps the better question is, When?)
Fwiw, I ran across a tool that generates osx and vista widgets from
web widgets when looking up how similar vista widgets were to osx
widgets:
