things that came up...found and fixed a bunch of range-related logic
bugs (had some tests that were explicitly testing for the wrong thing ;)

- should be writing up a post on some other long-term questions about
implication of rules using != and ranges, but for the most part I
think the logic changes are an improvement
- so, basically the refactoring allows "not" of inline functions to
work out correctly, as there's now a way to negate arbitrarily-
complex conditions and "or" operations are properly sequential
- which means, btw. that "x<>y" and "x<y or x>y" are NOT the same
thing wrt implication order... maybe.
- going to write something up on that to make sure i understand it
- but then code is ready to go
