Summer Research Intern opportunity at IBM Research. BS required, plus 1 yr Java/Eclipse. Aimed at graduate students, though as I read it, recent grads might be eligible.
A colleague of mine at IBM Research, Hawthorne, NY has an internship slot open for this summer. She begins interviewing next week, so the lead time for this is short. I understand it to be a good position in terms of salary, stipend for expenses, etc., as well as a great opportunity. Possible projects could include open source work on an interface between Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records for HIV care in resource poor settings, healthcare interoperability framework stuff. The stuff that interests me the most would be contributions relevant to our Electronic Medical Record work in Haiti, our Lab System development and implementation work in Haiti, our surveillance and lab assessment activities in Mozambique and Cote d'Ivoire, and our just-beginning work on health research informatics infrastructure in Kenya. Thanks, Bill Lober, MD Associate Professor Schools of Medicine & Nursing (Joint), Public Health (Adjunct) If you do choose to apply, let me know. In our department we have many projects related to advancing standards-based Health Information Exchanges (HIE) and developing new technologies within HIEs to improve clinical outcomes and population health. We participate in organizations like HL7 and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) to provide feedback on current specifications as well as motivation for new work. We contribute open source client-side implementations of IHE profiles in Open Health Tools (OHT) to advance the adoption of interoperability among healthcare vendors. We have client focused challenges where we work on projects such as developing new learning algorithms to detect negative consequences from unstudied multi-drug interactions, building a public health inclusive infrastructure that adopts clinical interoperability for the goals of public health surveillance, building new tooling for advancing uptake of the HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), and building a modeling framework that digests real-time standards-based reports and models disease progression under various potential interventions. Some of our recent notable department accomplishes/awards include a Laureate Award from Computerworld Information Technology for the collaborative work with the Middle East Consortium for Infectious Disease Surveillance, a Best HL7 CDA Case Study Award from IHIC2008, and an IBM Outstanding Award for Contributions to the Global Pandemic Initiative for Public Health.
