NYAM's Special Interest Group on Informatics presents an evening for both 
health care professionals and the public on developments in Health IT, 
especially as they relate to patients having their own electronic health 
record. Lygeia Ricciardi will give an overview of plans of the Office of the 
National Coordinator for Health Information Technology with particular concern 
for how they affect individuals, whether healthy or sick.  Patricia Brennan 
will give a high-level overview of how patients can or will interact with the 
health system and their own health information in the world of patient portals 
and personal health records.

Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of 
Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin. Currently 
Theme Leader of the Living Environments Laboratory at the Wisconsin Institutes 
for Discovery, Dr. Brennan received a Masters of Science in Nursing from the 
University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the 
University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following seven years of clinical practice in 
critical care nursing and psychiatric nursing, Dr. Brennan held several 
academic positions. She developed the ComputerLink, an electronic network 
designed to reduce isolation and improve self-care among home care patients and 
directed HeartCare, a web-based tailored information and communication service 
that helped home-dwelling cardiac patients recover faster, and with fewer 
symptoms. Dr. Brennan is National Program Director of Project HealthDesign, a 
RWJ-funded initiative designed to stimulate the next generation of personal 
health records. Additionally, she leads the WI-TECNE project, a statewide 
nursing faculty development effort supported by HRSA that will improve the 
integration of informatics and telehealth into nursing curricula. She is fellow 
of both the American Academy of Nursing (1991) and the American College of 
Medical Informatics (1993). Dr. Brennan was elected to the of the Institute of 
Medicine in 2002, and in 2009 became an elected member of The New York Academy 
of Medicine.

joined the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology 
(ONC) as its Senior Policy Advisor for Consumer e-Health. She is responsible 
for developing and managing ONC's national consumer e-health program. For the 
last several years she has been a consultant on consumer e-health through her 
own company,  Clear Voice Consulting,  and Clinovations, where she led the 
Consumer Health Division. Her consulting clients included the Robert Wood 
Johnson Foundation, the California Healthcare Foundation, the Center for 
Democracy and Technology, and the New York State Department of Health.
Previously, Lygeia was a Director in the Health Program at the Markle 
Foundation, a health policy analyst and speechwriter for the Chairman of the 
Federal Communications Commission, a content producer at a dot com, and a 
Research Associate at Harvard Business School. She earned a Masters in 
Technology & Education from Harvard, with extensive independent study at the 
MIT Media Lab with its co-founder, Seymour Papert. She writes, speaks and 
tweets frequently about consumer engagement in health and health care via 
technology.
