Call for Papers
IEEE Pervasive Computing
Special issue on Pervasive Information and Communication Technologies
for Development (ICT4D)

Submission Deadline: 1 September 2011
Publication: July?September 2012
Works in Progress Submission Deadline: 21 July 2011

IEEE Pervasive Computing invites submissions on the use of pervasive
computing technologies for social and economic development, especially
in contexts where conventional solutions are impractical due to
factors such as income levels, literacy rates, and available
infrastructure. These mobile and wireless technologies hold the
potential to significantly improve the lives of large populations in
developing regions.

Example topics for this special issue include but are not limited to
the following:
?????? ? Pervasive computing applications for education, health,
finance, agriculture, governance, etc. in developing regions
?????? ? Adapting content and applications to local languages and
education levels
?????? ? User interfaces on pervasive devices for low-literacy and/or
intermittently connected populations
?????? ? Low-cost computing devices and low-cost network connectivity
?????? ? Energy-efficient and intermittent-energy devices, networks, and systems
?????? ? Mechanisms for minimizing energy, latency, and storage
?????? ? Embedded sensing and/or participatory sensing systems for
ecology, sustainability, agriculture, etc. in developing regions
?????? ? Shared access to pervasive computing infrastructure,
including personalization and privacy concerns
?????? ? Security challenges for pervasive technologies in developing regions
?????? ? Case studies of operational Pervasive ICT4D devices and systems
?????? ? Surveys of recent research in Pervasive ICT4D

Special Issue Guest Editors
?????? ? Elizabeth Belding , University of California, Santa Barbara
?????? ? Ram?n C?ceres, AT&T Labs
?????? ? Tapan Parikh, University of California, Berkeley
?????? ? Lakshminarayanan Subramanian, New York University

Submission Information
Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should follow the
magazine's guidelines on style and presentation. All submissions will
be anonymously reviewed in accordance with normal practice for
scientific publications. Submissions should be received by 1 September
2011 to receive full consideration.

In addition to full-length submissions, we also invite
work-in-progress submissions of 250 words or less (submit to
pervasive at computer.org). These will not be peer-reviewed but will be
reviewed by the Department Editor Anthony Joseph and, if accepted,
edited by the staff into a feature for the issue. The deadline for
work-in-progress submissions is 21 July 2011.
