Background

UN Global Pulse is an innovations team in the United Nations, that is
developing real-time crisis impact monitoring to assist governments to
effectively protect vulnerable populations through early warning of
slow onset crises. We?re looking for a Lead Software Developer to head
its software team and help develop technology communities around the
Global Pulse open source software platform and toolset.

The Lead Software Developer will work in the Global Pulse New York lab
and focus on designing and creating federated systems for real-time
information analysis and evidence-based decision-making. They will
lead and mentor members of the software development team, and support
capacity building efforts with both partner and client organisations,
and local and global software development communities. The Lead
Software Developer reports to the Global Pulse Chief Platform
Architect.

Background

The overarching objective of Global Pulse is to develop a 21st century
approach to real-time crisis
impact monitoring that enables decision makers to protect vulnerable
populations with agile, targeted policy responses. To this end, Global
Pulse is establishing an innovative monitoring framework that combines
new types of real-time data with traditional development indicators to
detect early impacts of crises, and developing free and open source
toolkit ? assembled largely out of existing technologies ? for
real-time data monitoring, collaborative analysis, visualization and
decision-making.

The internship duration is between 3 and 4 months, starting in July
2011 and finishing by the 30 October 2011.
