Position: Full-time researcher or postdoc
Location: Microsoft Research India (Bangalore)

The Technology for Emerging Markets (TEM) group at Microsoft Research India is
hiring! We are looking for one or more individuals to join our team, as
Postdocs or Researchers at any stage in their careers, to conduct cutting-edge
research in information and communication technologies for development
(ICTD/ICT4D). Come work with us to study, design, build, and evaluate
technologies and systems that can address the needs and aspirations of people
in underserved communities around the world.
ICTD is an inherently multidisciplinary domain, requiring contributions
from-and collaborations between-researchers in computer science, engineering,
human-computer interaction and design, public health, public policy, and a
variety of social sciences including development studies, anthropology,
psychology, education, economics, communication, and sociology. For this
call, the departmental affiliation on your academic degree is not as important
as the quality of your research and your sustained commitment to the domain.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated a passion for tackling the hardest
questions in ICTD in a thoughtful and rigorous way. Those without previous
experience in ICTD should be able to demonstrate how their past work will
inform their transition to ICTD research. Researchers are expected to define
their own research agendas and publish their work in top international venues.
If you are interested in applying for a full-time Researcher or Postdoc
position, please submit your CV or résumé, a cover letter/research statement
describing how your research relates to ICTD, two publications you feel
represent your best work (one publication is sufficient for postdoc
applicants), and at least three references. Our group is primarily focused on
the domains of healthcare and education, but researchers with interests in
other domains are welcome to apply. The minimum educational requirement for
this position is a PhD or equivalent degree.
Please apply online, listing Ed Cutrell as your primary contact. Review of
applications will begin on January 15, 2014, and continue until the position is
filled. The starting date is flexible, with a preference for late summer or
fall of 2014.
Applications should be made at http://bit.ly/acYHGt. Questions can be directed
to cutrell at microsoft dot com.
About the Technology for Emerging Markets group
(http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/groups/tem/)
The Technology for Emerging Markets (TEM) group seeks to address the needs and
aspirations of people in the world's developing communities. Our research
targets people who are increasingly consuming computing technologies and
services as well as those for whom access to computing remains largely out of
reach.
TEM is a multidisciplinary group engaged in a range of technical and
social-science research. By combining a variety of backgrounds and training, we
are able to engage deeply with some of the complex problems associated with
poverty and scarce resources. Our goal is to study, design, build, and evaluate
technologies and systems that are useful for people living in underserved rural
and urban communities.
TEM is based in Bangalore with Microsoft Research India and we enjoy a
remarkably open and collaborative environment. The center of India's tech boom,
Bangalore is a cosmopolitan, world-class city, with a vibrant energy unlike
anywhere in the world. Our location in Bangalore gives us excellent scope for
direct interaction with a range of low-income urban and rural communities, and
we work closely with a variety of partners, including NGOs, universities,
government, private companies, and groups within Microsoft. However, our
emphasis is on rigorous research and exploratory pilots rather than product or
business development.
