is basically a think tank for the UN, and is charged with doing basic research, 
publishing, and generating innovation and policy recommendations relevant for 
the UN. This is a fascinating opportunity to build an ICTD program from the 
ground up! Could be a great job for a mid- or late-career researcher with a bit 
of entrepreneurial flair (e.g., perhaps a leave of absence of a few years from  
a tenured position?). And Macao is a pretty interesting place....

UN University Seeks Innovative Director for Software Technology Institute in 
Macao

The United Nations University (UNU) is searching for an entrepreneurial 
director for the complete renewal of the International Institute for Software 
Technology (UNU-IIST), located in Macao, SAR, China.

This director will set the vision and hire the staff to build an ambitious and 
cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research programme to address key challenges 
faced by developing societies through high-impact innovations in computing and 
information technologies. We are looking for a dynamic individual with deep 
experience in ICTs for sustainable development who can recruit and lead a 
world-class team of researchers.

A focused research programme, to be developed in collaboration with the Board 
of UNU-IIST, should contribute through impact and policy advice to the goals 
and priorities of the emerging UN development framework. The Institute's scope 
for doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships should contribute to nurturing the 
next generation of computing and information scientists and engineers in 
developing countries.

The core budget of UNU-IIST is derived from investment income from an endowment 
of US$30 million.

Macao, where UNU-IIST is located, is a free port, at the heart of Asia, a 
significant asset. The Institute's premises are situated in a renovated 
historic colonial-style Portuguese world heritage building situated on the 
slopes of Guia Hill, one of the high points of Macao.

Required Qualifications and Experience
* A Ph.D. in computer science or a related discipline
* A strong background of research in an area of particular relevance to 
developing societies such as health, education,
agriculture, disaster management, livelihoods, etc.
* A reputation for visionary leadership in an academic or research institution
* The ability to renew UNU-IIST and to recruit and lead a dynamic team of 
world-class researchers
* Demonstrated capacities in building and sustaining international networks and 
partnerships
* Strong fund-raising skills and experience
* Excellent management and communications skills favouring work with colleagues 
of diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds
* A deep commitment to issues of human development
