TASCHA in brief
What we've been up to
Happy New Academic Year! While universities generally quiet down during the
summer, TASCHA hasn't slowed down at all. Over the summer, we welcomed visiting
researchers, hosted 25 leaders from Myanmar for a five-week workshop on
information strategies for societies in transition, and released new tools and
resources based on findings from the Global Impact Study. TASCHA researchers
also travelled to Ghana, Tahiti, and Namibia (just to name a few), and we moved
our offices to the University of Washington campus. In this newsletter, you'll
find more information on what we've been up to.

Over the summer, TASCHA and the UW Jackson School hosted 25 of Myanmar’s
leaders from government, civil society, political parties, ethnic communities,
libraries, and the media for a five-week workshop. During the five weeks, the
fellows honed their leadership skills and developed information strategies that
will broaden information literacy throughout the country, facilitate the
peacebuilding process, and support fair elections in the next year. More

Global Impact Study
New tools & resources on why public access ICTs matter
It’s been just over a year since we released the Global Impact Study‘s final
report, Connecting people for development: Why public access ICTs
matter<http://tascha.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=8ee61c5dda&e=0ed943b8e9>.
In the past year, we have been very busy disseminating the findings,
participating in discussions about public access and development, and creating
various tools and resources based on the study’s findings and data. We’ve
developed an
infographic<http://tascha.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=73c7363ce3&e=0ed943b8e9>,
 a data visualization
tool<http://tascha.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=9252f0e2c7&e=0ed943b8e9>,
 and a
video<http://tascha.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=a25ad54177&e=0ed943b8e9>
(just to name a few) to help answer the overarching question, “Why do public
access ICTs matter for development?" The goal of the resources we've created is
to help make the study’s findings and data more accessible and relevant to the
international development, public library, and public access communities. More

Innovation Spaces
Libraries & makerspaces: A revolution?
One of TASCHA’s research projects is focusing on innovation
spaces<http://tascha.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=22478d3c58&e=0ed943b8e9>
(including makerspaces), and what the implications and opportunities are for
libraries. We are working on crystallizing some aspects of this research and
where we see it heading. We are fortunate to have maker movement maven Lauren
Britton helping us flesh out our ideas and contribute her expertise in the
area. We hosted an event while Lauren was with us in Seattle (more on the event
here<http://tascha.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=15ba4d68a5574069ed7bf2cc1&id=de4d5942c1&e=0ed943b8e9>),
and since her time here, she has worked on a series of blog posts titled,
“Making and the maker movement: A democratizing force or an example of cultural
reproduction?” Click "more" to read the first blog post, which links to other
posts in the series. More
