I don't know about City Gov/City Council but I know that the CRTA used to have an occasional presence at Chamber of Commerce functions, including the Tech/Business Expo (the chaos group was psuedo represented via Eater and Brian(working the whole CRTA/Chaos706 thing)). Whatever happened to the CRTA anyway?
If you are interested in Chamber functions then you could check out the Chamber of Commerce Calendar which lists all their events.
Also the Columbus area has a calendar of events that has been around for years online, called the Community Calendar, which you could take advantage of, i.e. posting "new user meets and greets", etc...
Overall though... I don't think anyone will take "hostile action toward the group later down the road" as long as you don't step on anyone's toes and be (
cringe) political with your statements about others and way of handling situations. You get more done by working with them than by making enemies.
Off topic:
Never seems to amaze me that everytime a "meeting" is planned I already have something going on... ah well.

If not, maybe we can attend some of the Chamber of Commerce power
lunches/breakfasts and work on making our presence known so we may
avoid the possibility of hostile action toward the group later down the
