        If I may ... For serious learning/hacking, get rid of Ubuntu, and pick 
up a bare-bones distro like Slackware or Gentoo. Ubuntu comes with alot 
of overhead (in the name of ease of use/friendliness) that less 
experienced admins/users won't know to look for and sort out. It's not a 
problem when you're running on multicore P4s or Xeons with gigs of RAM 
like we do here, but in a remotely limited environment, it's really 
going to mess with you.
        If you did that, then you wouldn't need a new machine. Most of us here 
will tell you that if a medium range speed machine with 256mb of ram 
won't host your average linux needs, then the answer isn't a better 
machine, it's a re-tooling of the linux on it.
