I'd be curious what the new failure mode looks like, just for future

We're looking into whether the failure that this (un)setting addresses 
indicates an issue on our part, or on the part of one of the third-party 
software packages we bundle, and intend to either address it or file an 
issue against the external package depending on what we find.

We test against Ubuntu regularly, so I wouldn't expect you to see problems 
there, but if you do, definitely let us know.
