The attached patch cleans up the code involved in gatherCandidates and
addCandidate. Variables and functions are re-named so that their use is
clearer, several data structures are wrapped up inside a single object, and
functionality is broken out into several different functions.
These changes will make the code easier to understand. In addition, it will be
easier to transfer information from the addCandidate logic to the
resolveNormalCall logic, which is necessary for the next stage of my work on
delaying the instantiation of generic functions.
