Only ever seem one C++ compiler application that was really clean.

What about others?

Keep it Simple. Stay with C for compiling.

Ultimately you will want to produce compile backends direct from 'chpl'.
C is likely to be a lot easier reference point from which to start.

Another example of not eating dogfood is that many Linux kernel developers
actually use Macs.

Now that is another argument! Better for a discussion over a beer.
