Regarding the following quote from Gerald's mail, and correcting myself:

language change because 1-based indexing is arguably most typical and
natural for that context.

I should retract my previous characterization because I'm neither an
author nor user of the linear algebra library, so may have jumped to
conclusions based on my own assumptions that aren't necessarily true. In
writing this, I obviously believed that we wouldn't change the linear
algebra library, but in reality that may not necessarily be true (nor
might it have been the best example for this argument).
