Would you please distribute this to all of lists and names you now
report to about your crime issues as it is very important so that
children in our community can get fed during the weekends.
"Dear Neighbors:
I learned a startling fact recently at Margaret Brent Elementary and
Middle School and that is 10% of all children attending that school
are homeless. If we utilize the total population of students
attending the school it means that 27.8 students are living with
relatives, on the street and/or in automobiles at best without running
water and electricity. This is in a neighborhood which is supposed to
be a fairly well to do neighborhood. This cannot be tolerated and
something must be done. We have a number of associations in this
neighborhood who can come forward and actually accomplish what we are
doing at St. John's United Methodist Church of Baltimore City.
We have established under our Peace with Justice forum a plan where we
have adopted five families and we prepare two days of meals that do
not require refrigerataion and or electricity which we deliver to
Margaret Brent and which they pass on to children of the most dire
need. We follow VIVA Houses plan of setting up basic meals for these
two days and have them delivered in back packs to the school on Friday
morning so that they can be distributed to the children when they
leave for the weekend. Our school system does provide two meals a day
during the school week to these children, but then the weekend comes
and many go without eating all through the weekend. If all of the
community associations, such as CVCA, AIA, Harwood, Old Goucher and
any that I don't know about would take a number of these adopted
children and provide food over the weekends, these children would come
to school ready to learn. I am sure the same conditions prevails at
Barclay School as well and this is a wonderful way for the community
to come forward and provide this food for these children. If you have
any questions about how this is accomplished you can contact me
directly and I will gladly advise you how St. John's United Methodist
Church of Batlimore City set up a plan to do this for Maargaret Brent.
Let's make sure that no child goes hungry over the weekend. Thank you.
Christian
