Hmmmmm.. Steven Wolfram developed Mathematica. I was talking about Matlab,
which was originally developed by Cleve Moler. Octave is an open-source
derivative of Matlab. So I'm not sure I see the connection there.

Matlab and Octave seem focused on numerical methods, linear algebra, etc.
Mathematica seems more focused on symbolic equation-solving processes.

However, both languages seem to have adopted APL's idea of implicit
array-handling, though the detailed syntax is different in each case.
