Brian - thank you for the link. I checked out the video and ended up using
viewmat. It was my first time using viewmat and I was impressed by how easy
it was to use and how quickly I could get useful insight.

It would be neat to be able to zoom or sort interactively. I found the
script for the spy http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/Scripts/Viewmat%20Spy which
was useful when the values weren't scaled. It would also be neat if the
colors could scale but keep the data unscaled for tooltips or inspection.
It might be something I try to add on or switch to D3 or something else.
This works well enough for now.
