This is the kind of thing we should be able to do with array notation - that's basically what they are working with (albeit, with restricted functionality and restricted code size). I think it would be worth going through the examples that they showed the code for, but I can barely read it. Still, I'm thinking that webgl would be a good alternative notation for people with a J background to learn. It's far more constrained, of course, but the basic skills and techniques you learn in J (like data-driven code) seem like a natural in webgl contexts. That said, this kind of thing takes time and patience, and a willingness to experiment (along with some new vocabulary).
